Narrative in films - Harry Potter and the deathly Hallows Part 2

1. What genre(s) is your film?
The genre of the film is fantasy, due to the fact it is mysterious and has the classic story of good and evil it.

2. What sub-genre is your film?
Although being predominately fantasy there is also a lot of action which takes place during the film. For example Harry verses Voldemort as they are using weapons, wands.

3. Is it a hybrid genre? Which genres if so?
I believe that the film doesn't have a hybrid genre because it is predominately fantasy and only has hints of other genre's such as romance. It is not enough to create a hybrid genre as it only features in a small amount of the film. The film only has a sub-genre as the only other predominant genre of the film is action, but it goes along with the main genre and doesn't count and a genre on its own.

4. What iconography is present throughout the film that enables you to classify its genre?
The iconography in the film is magic shown by the use of wands, mystery shown by the use of dark colours and camera angles, darkness surrounding characters, you don't know the character fully, there is a sense of mystery within them.

5. Does your film apply with Todorov’s narrative structure? Explain why/why not.
This particular Harry Potter film does fit in with Todorov's narrative structure. The film starts off with Equilibrium at the beach all is calm although there is still the threat of Voldemort about. Then disequilibrium occurs when the head to the bank to find the horcrux, then Hogwarts to fight Voldemort and try to kill him. Huge action scenes take place, finishing with the fight between Harry and Voldemort. Equilibrium is then restored as all is calm although the change is that Voldemort is now dead and there is no threat to any of the characters, they all get their fairytale endings.

6. Do any of the characters match Propp’s 8 character types?
In the film there are Propp's eight character types:
The Hero: Harry Potter
The Villain: Lord Voldemort
The Donor: Hagrid, he helps Harry in his journey by providing protection and hints to what Harry should be doing.
Dispature: Hermione and Ron, they provide support to Harry as well as solving their own problems

Princess: Ginny Weasley, although Harry doesn't realise it at first by the end of the film he is fighting for her and her safety.
Father: Arthur Weasley, the father of Ginny Weasley.

7. Analyse the key binary oppositions in your film
In Harry Potter the key binary oppositions in the film are:

Good Vs. Evil - Harry Potter Vs. Lord Voldemort. Harry Potter represents the good in the film, he is fighting for what is right and for the safety of others. Whilst in contrast Voldemort represents everything that is evil the film, he is fighting for all the wrong reasons and for power over mankind.

Violence Vs. No Violence - Action scenes (fighting) Vs. The beach scenes- complete calmness. Violence in the film is everywhere during the fighting scenes between the good and the evil, it creates tension and excitement. Where as in contrast no violence in particular scenes such as the beach scenes at the start of the film allow the audience to understand the situation and how the characters are feeling which may be harder to see in the violence and action.

Darkness Vs. Light - Forbidden Forest Vs. The beach. The contrast in light reflects the mood of the film and how as the audience we feel. From the lighting we can tell when there is a chance of mood coming. It provides key indications to the audience of when change the situation in the film will change.
